Captions show your script as on-screen text, so viewers can follow your video even with the sound off. This doc shows how to generate captions, fix their text and timing, change how they look and where they sit, and download, hide, or delete them.

Generate captions

To generate captions:

  1. In the AI Studios video editor, click Captions (the CC icon) in the left toolbar. The Caption panel opens.

  2. Click Generate Captions. AI Studios creates captions for all scenes and times them to the voice. This usually takes a few moments to under a minute, depending on script length.

Opening Captions in the left toolbar and clicking Generate Captions

Note: Captions are created from the script. Type your script in the script panel on the right before you generate captions. A scene with no script has nothing to caption.

💡 Tip: Already have subtitles? Click Captions Upload (.srt) instead to import your own .srt file.

Edit caption text

To fix a caption's text:

  1. In the Transcript tab, click a caption line. Captions are listed by scene.

  2. Type to correct it. Editing a caption changes only the caption text, not the script the avatar reads.

Clicking the first caption line and correcting its text

When you click a line, its words appear as chips:

  • Click between two words to split the caption there.

  • Use the arrows to move the first or last word to the previous or next caption (Alt+↑ / Alt+↓).

💡 Tip: Use Find & Replace in the Transcript tab to find a word or phrase in your captions and replace it.

Adjust caption timing

To adjust a caption's timing:

  1. Click the time under the caption (for example, 0:00.3 · 2.1s) to open its Start and End times.

  2. Use - and +, type a time, or click Set to playhead.

  3. Keep Shift following checked to move the captions after it along with your change.

Note: A red Fast label under a caption shows its reading speed in characters per second when it's above the recommended limit. Shorten the text, split the caption, or give it more time so viewers can read it.

Style your captions

To change how captions look:

  1. Open the Style tab.

  2. Click a style under AI Studios' caption styles (for example, Black box, White box, or Orange pill).

Choosing the Orange pill style in the Style tab

With Apply to all scenes turned on at the top of the Caption panel, your style and layout changes apply to every scene. To reuse your own look, click Save current style to keep it in My Styles.

Position and size

To set where captions sit and how big they are:

  1. Open the Layout tab.

  2. Choose a Position: Top, Middle, or Bottom of the video, measured from the safe area.

  3. Set the text size in Size (pt) and the width of the caption box in Width (%).

Moving captions to the top in the Layout tab

The Layout tab also has:

  • Horizontal position: places the caption box left, center, or right within the safe area.

  • Anchor: sets which edge of the caption box stays in place (top, middle, or bottom) when the box gets taller.

  • Max lines: limits each caption to 1 or 2 lines, or No limit.

  • Show safe area: shows where captions stay clear of the edges.

Download, hide, or delete

To download your captions:

  1. Go back to the Transcript tab.

  2. Click SRT to download one .srt file for the whole video. Scene start times in the file are estimated from the voice or caption length.

  3. To download one scene only, click ⋯ next to the scene heading (for example, SCENE 1) and choose Caption Download (.srt).

To delete captions, click ⋯ next to a scene heading and choose Delete.

To hide all captions without deleting them, turn off Toggle captions visibility at the top of the Transcript tab. Turn it back on to show them again.

Turning Toggle captions visibility off and on

Note: There's no single button to delete the captions of every scene. To remove all captions, choose ⋯ > Delete for each scene. When no scene has captions, the Caption panel shows Generate Captions and Captions Upload (.srt) again.

💡 Tip: The eye icon next to a scene heading hides that scene's captions only.

FAQ

Why can't I generate captions?
Captions are created from the script. Enter a script in the script panel first, then click Generate Captions.

What language are the captions in?
Captions are generated in the language of the video script. If you translate the video, generate new captions so they match the translated language.

How do I download captions for another platform?
Click SRT in the Transcript tab to download one .srt (SubRip Subtitle) file for the whole video, or use ⋯ > Caption Download (.srt) for a single scene.

How do I remove captions or use my own .srt file instead?
Click ⋯ next to each scene heading and choose Delete; repeat for every scene to remove all captions. When the project has no captions, the Caption panel shows Captions Upload (.srt) so you can import your own file. To keep captions but not show them, turn off Toggle captions visibility instead.

I changed my script. Do my captions update?
Click Regenerate All Captions to rebuild them from the new script. It replaces your caption edits, so use it after you finish changing the script.

Is generating captions available on every plan?
Generating captions and uploading .srt files may depend on your plan.
