In this help doc

A Video Avatar is a talking avatar made from a video of you, so you can make new videos by typing a script instead of recording again. This doc shows how to record or upload your video, review the details AI fills in, and create the avatar.

Start a Video Avatar

To start a Video Avatar:

  1. Go to Avatars, open the My Avatars tab, and click Create Avatar.

  2. Click Video to Avatar.

  3. Choose Live Recording to record with your webcam, or Video Upload to use a video you already have. Then click Next.

Note: The clips in this article use a drawn sample image instead of a real person. For your own avatar, record or upload a video of yourself.

Note: To make a Photo Avatar from a single photo instead, choose Photo to Avatar on the same screen. See How do I create a Photo Avatar?

Record with your webcam

To record with your webcam:

  1. If your browser asks, allow AI Studios to use your camera and microphone.

  2. Choose the language of the script you'll read on screen (for example, English).

  3. Click Start Recording. Check the tips in Before you record, then click Start Recording again. A 3-second countdown starts.

  4. Read the on-screen script. Click Finish Recording when you're done. It turns on after 15 seconds of recording.

For the best results:

  • Use bright, even lighting so your face is clearly visible.

  • Position the camera at eye level and keep it stable.

  • Look directly at the camera and speak naturally. Turning your face away often or moving out of the frame may lower the quality of your avatar.

  • Subtle head movements, facial expressions, and hand gestures make your avatar feel more natural.

  • Keep your mouth and face unobstructed, and make sure only one person is in the frame.

  • Pause briefly between sentences and close your mouth naturally.

  • Avoid overly fast or exaggerated movements.

Upload a video

To upload a video you already have:

  1. Click Drag and drop or click to upload, or drag your video onto it.

  2. Use an MP4, MOV, or WEBM file up to 5GB that is at least 10 seconds long and shows a clear, front-facing face.

  3. Check the preview. To use a different file, click Replace Video. Then click Submit.

Uploading a sample video on the Video Upload screen and pointing to Submit

The Recommended Upload Guidelines on the screen suggest:

  • Good: a 15–60 second talking video with one person from start to finish, the face centered and clearly visible, good lighting, and a steady camera.

  • Avoid: multiple people or scene changes, covered or partially visible faces, blurry, dark, or low-quality videos, and filters, effects, or heavily edited videos.

💡 Tip: Start and end your video with your mouth closed. Think about the posture and movements you want your avatar to have before you record.

Review and create your avatar

To review and create your avatar:

  1. On Review your video, check the video and the Avatar Name.

  2. AI fills in the Avatar Identity: Personality, Speaking Style, and Description. Edit any field, or click AI-analyze to analyze it again.

  3. Select the confirmation checkbox, then click Create Avatar.

Reviewing the Avatar Identity for a sample video, confirming consent, and the Create Avatar button

The Avatar Identity is optional. It describes how your avatar speaks and expresses itself in generated videos. Under Option, you can also turn on Enable reverse playback for seamless looping. You don't need it if your video starts and ends on the same frame.

Note: You must own the rights to the video or have permission from the person shown. Using someone else's video without permission, or content that infringes copyright, publicity, or other rights, may lead to restrictions under applicable laws and AI Studios policies.

Use your Video Avatar

When your Video Avatar is ready, it appears in My Avatars. Select it when you make a video in AI Studios, then enter your script and choose a voice.

FAQ

Where did Upload a Photo go?
Making an avatar from a single photo is now Photo to Avatar on the Create Avatar screen. Avatars you already made with Upload a Photo still work.

How long should my video be?
An uploaded video must be at least 10 seconds long, and a 15–60 second talking video is recommended. A webcam recording can be finished after 15 seconds.

Can I create an avatar of someone else?
Only if you have their permission. You confirm this with the checkbox before you create the avatar.

What if all my avatar slots are used?
You can't create a new Video Avatar until you delete one you no longer need. Deleting a Video Avatar frees up its slot.
